Your Gender Scan, Explained
A gender scan identifies whether you are expecting a boy or a girl, from 16 weeks onwards. Alongside the reveal, your sonographer performs a limited check within the scope of the appointment, looking at cardiac activity, movements and position where appropriate, so you leave with an answer and a moment to remember. It costs £65, includes digital images, and is available to patients aged 18 and over.
When can fetal sex be identified?
Ultrasound cannot reliably determine fetal sex before 16 weeks, and we do not offer gender scans earlier than this. If you would like an earlier answer, our Early Gender Blood Test + Pregnancy Scan (£179) identifies fetal sex from 6 completed weeks using a small blood sample taken after a pregnancy ultrasound with our sonography team, and NIPT screening from 10 weeks includes the option of finding out the sex alongside chromosomal screening.
How we determine your baby’s sex
Your sonographer examines your baby’s anatomy directly on the screen. From 16 weeks the physical differences are usually clear, provided your baby is in a helpful position. Accuracy depends on the view we can get on the day, which is affected by your baby’s position, the placenta, the amount of fluid and how your baby is lying. Our policy is simple: we only confirm your baby’s sex when it is clearly visible. If we are not certain, we will say so rather than guess.
What the scan includes, and what it does not
This is a focused, limited-scope scan. Your sonographer will look at cardiac activity, movements and position within the scope of the appointment, but it is not an anomaly scan and does not replace your NHS 20-week screening scan, which is a detailed examination of your baby’s development. A reassuring result means the features assessed appeared as expected at that time; it cannot rule out every condition. If we notice anything we think needs medical review, your sonographer will explain it sensitively, document it and provide a letter for your midwife or GP with clear next steps.
What if my baby will not cooperate?
Some babies sit awkwardly on the day, with legs crossed or the cord in the way. If we cannot get a clear enough view to be confident, we will not guess. Under our free rescan promise, your sonographer will explain whether a complimentary rescan on another date is appropriate, when your baby has usually moved into a better position.
Choose your reveal
Some parents want to see for themselves on screen. Others prefer the room lit blue or pink using our Philips Hue lighting as the answer is revealed. If you are planning a gender reveal party, we can seal the result in an envelope so the surprise stays intact, and you can film or photograph the moment however you wish.
What to expect on the day
You can bring up to five guests, and children are welcome to attend with a responsible adult, so the people who matter can share the moment. After a short chat about your pregnancy, the scan is carried out over your tummy with warm gel, in a calm, dimmed room with a large screen. Most appointments take 20 to 30 minutes. No full bladder is needed from 16 weeks, and loose, two-piece clothing makes the scan easier.
Make more of the moment
From 26 weeks you can add a 4D (HDLive) glimpse of your baby’s face to your gender scan for £15, or book a dedicated 4D baby scan later in pregnancy. Many parents also return for a growth and wellbeing scan in the third trimester. Would rather not know the sex? Our Reassurance & Bonding Scan offers the same limited-scope look at your baby without the reveal.
All our scans and prices
All scans are carried out by our qualified sonographers. Patients aged 18 and over. No referral needed.
Not sure which scan you need? Use our scan chooser and pregnancy calculator, or see the Pregnancy Journey Package (three scans, £199).
Our free rescan promise. If your baby’s position prevents us obtaining an intended view on an eligible scan, such as a clear sex-confirmation view, a 4D facial view or a presentation view, your sonographer will explain whether a complimentary rescan is appropriate. It does not apply where an early pregnancy scan is inconclusive because the pregnancy may be earlier than expected, where the pregnancy location cannot yet be established, or where clinical follow-up or repeat imaging is advised for medical reasons.
“Explained everything in detail and constantly made sure I was ok during the process of doing my scans. Honestly, very glad I found this place… Hope to come back to you soon!”
A gender reveal moment to remember
When you are ready to find out, we can bathe the room in blue or pink using our Philips Hue smart lighting, a beautiful and personal touch as you discover your baby’s gender with the people who matter most. Gender can usually be confirmed by ultrasound from 16 weeks.
Available with our Gender & Baby Scan and 4D scans, just let your sonographer know you would like the reveal lighting.
Can My Partner and Family Attend the Scan?
Yes. You are welcome to bring a partner, family member or support person to your appointment. Our clinic is calm and quiet by design, so we ask that you keep additional guests to a maximum of five people. Children are welcome to attend as guests with a responsible adult. Please note that our ultrasound patients themselves must be aged 18 or over.
Your Sonographers
Our ultrasound service is led by Saher, a qualified radiographer and sonographer (radiography at the University of Bradford, Master’s in Ultrasound at the University of Cumbria, clinical training at Liverpool Women’s Hospital), and delivered by our qualified sonography team, including Huma, a CASE-accredited sonographer with a clinical background in women’s health. Every scan takes place in a clinic that is CQC-registered for Diagnostic and Screening Procedures.

Private scans and your NHS care
Private scans complement NHS maternity care; they do not replace your NHS dating or anomaly scans, antenatal screening or urgent maternity assessment.
