Your Early Pregnancy Scan, Explained

An early pregnancy scan, sometimes called a viability or reassurance scan, is carried out between 6 and 14 weeks. Its purpose is to assess where the pregnancy is developing, how many pregnancies there are, to take early measurements and to look for cardiac activity where appropriate for gestation, at a stage when most people have had no scan at all. It costs £60 and is available to patients aged 18 and over.

What we assess at your early pregnancy scan

  • The location of the pregnancy, and whether it appears to be inside the uterus
  • The number of pregnancies
  • Cardiac activity, where appropriate and visible for your gestation (often from around 6 to 7 weeks, but not always)
  • A crown to rump measurement to estimate how many weeks pregnant you are and your estimated due date
  • Early structures such as the gestational sac and yolk sac, where visible

Why around 7 weeks is often clearer than 6

Very early in pregnancy a few days make a real difference to what can be seen. At exactly 6 weeks it can still be too early to see everything clearly, even in a healthy pregnancy. We offer scans from 6 weeks, and we are honest that a scan at around 7 weeks or later will often give a more informative answer. If you would like to be seen at 6 weeks, we will not discourage you; we will simply explain what can and cannot be expected.

What “inconclusive” means, and what happens next

Sometimes an early scan cannot yet establish the location of the pregnancy, or cardiac activity cannot yet be seen because the pregnancy is earlier than expected. This does not necessarily mean something is wrong. Your sonographer will explain exactly what has and has not been seen and advise the appropriate follow-up, which may be a repeat scan in 7 to 14 days or assessment through your NHS early pregnancy service, depending on the findings. Our free rescan promise applies to position-dependent views on later scans; inconclusive early scans follow this clinical pathway instead.

Transabdominal or transvaginal?

Between 6 and 10 weeks a transvaginal (internal) scan often gives a much clearer view than a scan over the tummy, because the probe sits closer to the uterus. It involves a slim, covered probe and takes only a few minutes; it should not be painful, although you may feel mild pressure. It is safe in early pregnancy, it is never compulsory, and it is only carried out with your consent after a full explanation. You can choose an abdominal scan instead, a chaperone is available on request, and you can stop at any point. If a transvaginal scan is recommended, we will ask you to empty your bladder first.

What to expect on the day

You will park free of charge on site and be welcomed at reception a few minutes before your appointment. Your sonographer will talk through your history and any concerns before the scan begins. A warm gel is applied to your lower tummy and the scan is performed while you watch the screen, with your sonographer explaining what you are seeing as they go. Most appointments take 20 to 30 minutes, and you leave with your digital images and a clear explanation of the findings.

How to prepare

For a scan over the tummy, a moderately full bladder improves the view, so try to finish around a pint of water an hour before your appointment. Comfortable, two-piece clothing makes the scan easier. There is no need to fast.

If we see something that needs follow-up

If we see something unexpected, your sonographer will explain the finding sensitively and clearly, document it appropriately and advise you on the most appropriate next step or NHS pathway, with a letter you can take to your GP, midwife or local early pregnancy service. As a clinic registered with the CQC for Diagnostic and Screening Procedures, we have formal escalation pathways in place, so you are never left wondering what happens next.

Who books an early pregnancy scan?

Many of our patients come to us for early reassurance, because their dates are uncertain, after IVF or fertility treatment, or after a previous pregnancy loss or ectopic pregnancy when they are otherwise well and would like additional reassurance. Whatever your reason, you will find an unhurried, judgement-free appointment. If you are 10 weeks or more, you may also wish to read about NIPT screening, or look ahead to our gender scans from 16 weeks.

When a private scan is not the first step

Please do not wait for a private scan if you have severe or one-sided abdominal or pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, fainting or feel acutely unwell. Seek urgent NHS assessment through NHS 111, your local early pregnancy service or emergency care as appropriate. Call 999 in an emergency.

Later in pregnancy, if your baby’s movements are reduced, stop or change from their normal pattern, contact your maternity unit immediately rather than booking a private reassurance scan.

All our scans and prices

All scans are carried out by our qualified sonographers. Patients aged 18 and over. No referral needed.

Not sure which scan you need? Use our scan chooser and pregnancy calculator, or see the Pregnancy Journey Package (three scans, £199).

Our free rescan promise. If your baby’s position prevents us obtaining an intended view on an eligible scan, such as a clear sex-confirmation view, a 4D facial view or a presentation view, your sonographer will explain whether a complimentary rescan is appropriate. It does not apply where an early pregnancy scan is inconclusive because the pregnancy may be earlier than expected, where the pregnancy location cannot yet be established, or where clinical follow-up or repeat imaging is advised for medical reasons.

Want to know your baby’s sex early too?

Find out your baby’s sex from 6 completed weeks with our Early Gender Blood Test. Every Early Gender appointment at Pulse & Clarity includes a pregnancy ultrasound with our sonography team before the blood sample is taken. The scan allows us to assess the pregnancy’s gestational age, location, number of pregnancies and cardiac activity where appropriate and visible before proceeding with testing.

Why do we scan first?

Our pre-test pathway

As part of Pulse & Clarity Clinic’s pre-test pathway, every Early Gender Blood Test begins with an ultrasound. This helps us assess gestational age, pregnancy location, number of pregnancies, early pregnancy measurements and cardiac activity where appropriate and visible.

If the scan is too early or inconclusive to establish enough information to proceed appropriately, the blood sample may be deferred and the sonographer will explain the next step.

At around 6 weeks, ultrasound findings can occasionally still be inconclusive if the pregnancy is earlier than expected. If we cannot establish enough information to proceed appropriately, your sonographer will explain the next step before blood is taken. Patients aged 18 and over.

From 10 weeks, NIPT includes your baby’s sex at no extra cost alongside screening for chromosomal conditions. Every NIPT package includes a pregnancy ultrasound appropriate to your gestation, carried out before the blood sample is taken.

Can My Partner and Family Attend the Scan?

Yes. You are welcome to bring a partner, family member or support person to your appointment. Our clinic is calm and quiet by design, so we ask that you keep additional guests to a maximum of five people. Children are welcome to attend as guests with a responsible adult. Please note that our ultrasound patients themselves must be aged 18 or over.

Your Sonographers

Our ultrasound service is led by Saher, a qualified radiographer and sonographer (radiography at the University of Bradford, Master’s in Ultrasound at the University of Cumbria, clinical training at Liverpool Women’s Hospital), and delivered by our qualified sonography team, including Huma, a CASE-accredited sonographer with a clinical background in women’s health. Every scan takes place in a clinic that is CQC-registered for Diagnostic and Screening Procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early can I have an early pregnancy scan in Bradford?
From 6 weeks. Before 6 weeks a pregnancy is usually too small to assess and the result is likely to be inconclusive. Around 7 weeks or later often gives a clearer, more informative scan.
What can an early pregnancy scan tell me?
It assesses the location and number of pregnancies, takes early measurements to estimate gestational age and due date, and looks for cardiac activity where appropriate for gestation. It cannot guarantee that cardiac activity will be visible or that location can always be established at a very early stage.
What if the scan is inconclusive?
Sometimes the pregnancy is earlier than expected and the picture is not yet clear. Your sonographer will explain what has and has not been seen and advise the appropriate follow-up, which may be a repeat scan in 7 to 14 days or NHS early pregnancy assessment. The free rescan promise does not apply to inconclusive early scans; this clinical pathway does.
What if I have bleeding or pain?
Please do not wait for a private scan. If you have severe or one-sided abdominal or pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, fainting or feel acutely unwell, seek urgent NHS assessment through NHS 111, your local early pregnancy service or emergency care, and call 999 in an emergency. A private reassurance scan is not an emergency service.
Will I need an internal scan, and can I have a chaperone?
Between 6 and 10 weeks a transvaginal (internal) scan often gives the clearest view. It is never compulsory: it is fully explained, carried out only with your consent, and you can choose an abdominal scan instead. A chaperone is available for every internal scan, and you are welcome to bring someone with you.
Can I have the Early Gender Blood Test at the same visit?
Yes, and at Pulse & Clarity the two go together. Every Early Gender Blood Test begins with a pregnancy ultrasound with our sonography team before the blood sample is taken, so we can assess gestational age, pregnancy location, number of pregnancies and cardiac activity where appropriate and visible. The package is £179 from 6 completed weeks: the £129 blood test plus the Early Pregnancy Scan for £50 instead of £60. The test identifies fetal sex only and does not screen for chromosomal conditions. If the scan is too early or inconclusive to proceed appropriately, the blood sample may be deferred and your sonographer will explain the next step.
Do you scan anyone under 18?
No. Pulse & Clarity Clinic currently provides ultrasound examinations to patients aged 18 and over only. Children may attend as guests with a responsible adult.
What if you find something unexpected?
If we see something unexpected, your sonographer will explain the finding sensitively and clearly, document it appropriately and advise you on the most appropriate next step or NHS pathway.
Do I need a full bladder?
For a scan over the tummy, a moderately full bladder improves the view. If a transvaginal scan is recommended, you will be asked to empty your bladder first.
How much is an early pregnancy scan?
£60, including digital images. Dating scans from 10 to 14 weeks are also £60.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed. Private scans complement, but do not replace, your routine NHS antenatal care.

Private scans and your NHS care

Private scans complement NHS maternity care; they do not replace your NHS dating or anomaly scans, antenatal screening or urgent maternity assessment. If we see something that needs follow-up, we will explain it and direct you to the right NHS pathway. Private vs NHS scans: what is actually different? →
